BEST TV SHOWIn a year that saw the final episode of the incredible BATTLESTAR GALACTICA screen its final season it was obvious what was going to be the very best thing in the science fiction TV universe this year. So imagine our suprise when this award went to: TORCHWOOD:CHILDREN OF EARTH
Yes, the generally unloved spawn of DOCTOR WHO couldn't even manage a full third season and so settled for a five night mini-series, but what five nights they were! What started off as a light and occasionally silly romp tipped gradually into some of the darkest, most brutal, most thought-provoking science fiction that British Television has ever produced. This was probably only possible because the show was down for cancellation and so could take risks with its audience approval that continuing shows wouldn't have dared. If this is the last of TORCHWOOD then it took an embarrassing misfire and turned it into something memorable. Honourable mentions: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA - of course WORST TV SHOWAnyone who manages to get a science fiction show onto our TV screens earns our undying respect and admiration. Unfortunately the show itself doesn't always earn the same response. The thing we were least pleased to sit through (to review here so that you wouldn't have to) was: BOY MEETS GIRL
Despite a talented cast, this four part series quickly became a real slog to get through. It wasn't strong enough to be considered a drama and didn't have any laughs so it certainly wasn't a comedy. The storyline was repetitive and unfocussed and it had the weakest ending of the year by far. Dishonourable mentions: KNIGHT RIDER - for thinking that gratuitous bikini shots would distract us from how bad it was. TopBEST MOVIEIn 2009 the likes of Michael Bay and James Cameron spent almost as much money on science fiction special effects epics as we did on bailing out the banks and yet the movie of the year had a entire budget that wouldn't have paid for their trailer rentals: MOON
With an exceptional Sam Rockwell at its centre, MOON is everything that good science fiction should be - intelligent, surprising, fascinating, challenging and dealing with some very big issues. There were very few other films that dealt with issues as broad as betrayal, identity and what it means to be human. And yet, despite all that, it's not ponderous nor pretentious. Honourable mentions: WATCHMEN - for having a stab at the unfilmable and not failing utterly WORST MOVIEThere were a good many misfires during 2009, many of them being movies that we'd long waited for or followed on from others, but nothing prepared us for: TRANSFORMERS 2:REVENGE OF THE FALLEN
We're the first to admit that giant robots pounding on each other sounds like the kind of thing that we could watch all day, but this film proves that 's not the case. The low point is a joke based around Transformer testicles, but the rest of it is just repetitive and dull and by the end renders the human brain to gruel. Dishonourable mentions: GAMER - people blow up a lot to the point of tedium |
